Who I am. What I do. Why it matters.

In this episode of The Oral History Podcast, I share my personal journey from videographer and website designer to becoming a dedicated oral historian. I explain the services I offer — including life history interviews and video documentaries — and why preserving personal stories is such a powerful and lasting gift. Listeners will discover how the oral history process not only documents memories but also inspires reflection, healing, and connection across generations.

The following is a transcript of this episode:

Welcome back to The Oral History Podcast. My name is Kenneth Greenberg. I am an Oral Historian located in Princeton, New Jersey, working with clients from coast to coast, documenting their life histories and preserving their personal legacies.

In this episode, I’d like to tell you a little more about who I am, what I do, and why oral history has become such an important part of my life.

I’ve spent most of my career helping professionals service providers market their practices — first through website design, then through audio and video production. However, since 2022 I have shifted my focus from marketing to something much more personal. I’ve been working as an Oral Historian. I see this work is a natural extension of everything I’ve done since I started my marketing company, HG Media,  back in 1999.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with doctors, lawyers, consultants, and other professionals — helping them communicate who they are and what they do. Now, I help people communicate something even more personal: their life story.

As an Oral Historian, I specialize in conducting life history interviews. These are thoughtful, in-depth conversations that explore the meaningful events, memories, and experiences that have shaped a person’s life. I record these interviews in either audio or video format, and I preserve them so they can be shared — whether privately within a family or more broadly as part of a public legacy.

Here’s what I offer:

  • First, I conduct guided interviews that help clients reflect on their lives—from early childhood memories to major milestones, challenges, values, and life lessons.
  • I professionally record these interviews in audio or video formats — whichever is preferred.
  • I then produce edited oral histories or video documentaries that become keepsakes, often cherished by both the narrator and their family.

In addition to my oral history work, I produce two podcasts. One is The Princeton Podcast, which is hosted by the Mayor of Princeton to spotlight the remarkable people shaping our town. The other, of course, is this one—The Oral History Podcast—where I share insights about memory, storytelling, and the value of preserving our personal histories.

But beyond describing the services I offer, I want to explain why this work matters to me.

I see oral history as more than just a method of recording facts. It’s a way of helping people reflect on the full arc of their lives. Often, during these interviews, my clients gain new insights. They connect the dots between past events. They recollect and reflect on memories. And sometimes, they come to terms with moments they hadn’t fully processed before.

In a world that often rushes forward, oral history offers a moment to pause, to reflect, and to preserve your life story.

If this resonates with you, and you are interested in documenting your life stories, I'd be honored to help. As an Oral Historian, my job is to guide you through the process. Asking thoughtful questions and helping you reflect on the experiences that have shaped your life. We'll talk about everything from your childhood memories, to family traditions, to the major events that influenced your life.

The process is designed to help you reflect on what matters most while preserving your story for generations to come Why? Because your legacy matters. By documenting and preserving your life experiences, you're offering a gift to your loved ones that transcends time. You're creating a personal legacy that your family will cherish for generations.
