In this episode of The Oral History Podcast I explore how storytelling helps my clients clarify and reinforce their core values, such as integrity, courage, kindness, and love. I share stories that illustrate how oral history interviews bring these guiding principles into sharper focus. By revisiting meaningful moments, my clients often experience a renewed sense of purpose and a clearer understanding of the legacy they wish to leave behind. Ultimately, I emphasize how reflecting on personal values through oral history interviews can be both empowering and fulfilling.
The following is a transcript of the podcast episode:
Welcome to The Oral History Podcast. My name is Kenneth Greenberg. I am an Oral Historian located in Princeton, New Jersey, working with clients from coast to coast. Recording their oral histories. Preserving their memories and recollections. As an Oral Historian, I have the privilege of helping people reflect on their lives, recollect memories, experiences, and bring their stories to life in a way that is enjoyable and valuable.
In this episode I'd like to examine how oral history interviews help my clients clarify and reinforce their personal values. This process not only brings key life moments into focus but also reaffirms the principles that have guided my clients throughout their lives. These values often emerge naturally as stories are told—whether they involve courage, integrity, kindness, or love.
The Discovery Process
As an Oral Historian I often witness my clients experiencing ‘aha’ moments during interviews. As they share their stories, they begin to see patterns—decisions driven by a commitment to honesty, for instance, or acts of kindness that became turning points in their lives. It's remarkable how simply retelling an experience can bring clarity about why it was so significant and how it continues to shape their lives.
Margaret’s Kindness
Let me share a story from one of my clients. I will call her Margaret. A retired nurse, Margaret often went above and beyond for her patients. One particular story stood out. She cared for a terminally ill patient who had no family nearby. Despite her busy schedule, Margaret made time to visit him even on her days off, bringing warmth and companionship. As she recounted this memory, Margaret’s compassion became clear—not only as a core value but as a driving force throughout her life. This simple act of storytelling not only highlighted Margaret’s commitment to kindness but also reinforced its importance in her daily life, even after retiring.
The Reinforcement of Integrity
Another common value that emerges during interviews is integrity. Many of my clients share moments where they had to choose between what was easy and what was right. For example, one businessman described turning down a lucrative deal that conflicted with his ethical standards. As he revisited this story, he felt proud of sticking to his values, even at a financial cost. Recounting this moment didn’t just clarify his commitment to integrity—it reinforced his belief in living by it, even when facing challenging situations.
Courage - Rediscovering Strength
Courage also takes center stage in many personal histories. Acts of bravery often become defining stories in people’s lives, and retelling these stories can reignite a sense of strength and purpose. One of my clients, Emma, a retired teacher, described organizing a protest for better school conditions in the 1970s. Recalling this bold act reminded her of her lifelong dedication to social justice and rekindled her belief in the power of courage.
Love and Family as Core Values
Love and family are perhaps the most common values explored during oral history interviews. My clients often share stories of sacrifice and devotion that highlight love as a guiding principle. Take Sam, a grandfather who worked a second job to support his children’s education. When he told this story during his interview, it not only reconnected him with his past commitment but also reaffirmed his belief in the importance of family.
The Power of Storytelling
Reaffirming core values through storytelling can be deeply empowering. By recounting meaningful moments, my oral history clients don’t just revisit their past—they also clarify what matters most to them now. This reflection can be incredibly fulfilling, offering a renewed sense of purpose and confidence in the legacy they’re leaving behind.
