Oral History Interviews
Everyone’s life is unique, rich with experiences, memories, and stories. As an Oral Historian, my job is to capture and preserve those personal histories for loved ones.
Let me take you behind the scenes and describe how I approach the delicate and rewarding task of recording life stories, and why I believe this work is so important.
It all starts with careful preparation.
When I interview an oral history narrator, I’m inviting them to take me on a journey through their life. To do so, I prepare questions that encourage specific recollections, but I also allow the conversation to flow naturally. I find that some of the deepest memories often emerge when the narrator is given the space to think, to reflect, and to express themselves in their own time.
During the interview, I’m actively listening to the narrator's words and I’m paying attention to the tone, the emotion, the moments of silence. These elements are often important aspects of the content of the story. They add depth and authenticity, capturing both what happened as well as how it felt.
Recording oral histories with the right tools.
I use high-quality audio and video software to ensure that our recordings are clear and professional. I strive to create an environment where the narrator feels at ease. I always make sure they are in a quiet, comfortable setting, free from distractions. This helps the narrator relax and focus on their memories.
I also use high-quality software to edit and enhance our recordings. By applying some light editing here and there I can improve the pace and flow of your stories.
Preserving the recordings is as important as capturing them.
After the interview, I carefully archive the recordings, making sure they’re stored safely and securely. I create multiple digital copies to be downloaded as well as to shared online, to ensure that the narrator's interviews are preserved for the long term. This is crucial because these recordings are personal legacies. They are the voices of loved ones who have lived through unique times, and their stories deserve to be preserved for future generations.
I can also create Interview Highlights and Video Documentaries.
Once my interviews are complete, I often collaborate with the family members to create other personal keepsakes from the recordings. This could include edited interview highlights or video documentaries containing family photos, news clippings or other memorabilia. Ultimately, the goal is to create a lasting tribute that honors the narrator’s life and allows their personal legacy to be shared with loved ones.
This process is deeply rewarding, for the narrator, for their families, and for me as well. It’s about preserving memories, connecting generations, contributing to a family heritage, and ensuring that the stories and memories of the past are not lost.
